What comes to mind when thinking of the colors red, white, and blue? If you’re thinking the United States, then think again, I was describing the Costa Rican flag. To be more specific it has five stripes, the middle stripe being red, (Which represents the warmth of the Costa Rican people, their love of life, and their bloodshed.) The white stripes are located on the top and bottom of the red stripe, representing things such as happiness and wisdom. The top and bottom of the flag is blue, (these represent things ranging from the sky to intellectual thinking.) Lastly the symbol of a boat which seems to be in a river surrounded by mountains represents the many waterways and mountains. They have stayed loyal to their flag, their country, and their democratic government system which they have had since 1949. Democracies consist of free and fair elections, protection of human rights, the participation of citizens of all lifestyles, and the law applies to everyone. The leader who enforces this government is Laura Chinchilla, the first woman president of Costa Rica. This country’s main language is Spanish, although in tourist destinations and business communities they speak English. Some agricultural products of Costa Rica include pineapples, sugar cane, oranges, bananas, and coco beans. However, Costa Rica couldn’t do without the following major industries; food processing, textiles, clothing, constructing material, fertilizer, and plastic products. All of these things make Costa Rica what it is today.
